Problem Solving

With all the problems we are facing due to work and life, it seems as if there is never enough time to solve each one without dealing with some adversity along the way. Consequently, when a person encounters a new problem or decision they must make, they react with a decision that seemed to work before because it is easy with this approach to get stuck in a circle of solving the same problem over and over again.According to Margaret J. Wheatley, we experience problem-solving sessions as war zones, we view competing ideas as enemies, and we use problems as weapon to blame and defeat opposition forces. At last we will realize that we can’t come up with real lasting solutions. Everybody can benefit from having good problem solving skills when encountering problems on a daily basis; some problems are obviously more severe or complex than others. Personally, I agree that everyone has their own way to solve a problem in several ways.

First, I believe that we should take an overview of the problem at the beginning, as there are many ways to solve problems, and it will depend on your situation, experience, knowledge, attitude and the problem itself to determine the best approach. Some situations may be that you have a long term problem that will take time to resolve, such as personal issues This situation may be pressing, but not immediate. Such may be the case for solving a problem at work, in education, and with personal issues. In an extreme state, your situation may be dire, such as discovering your single-engine plane has just run out of gas, and a solution is needed immediately. In this case, if I’m in a serious situation, I would more likely use my gut feeling to solve the problem. Second, the mind is the most powerful tool of the human species because it allows us to use logic to arrive at a conclusion. To solve virtually any problem, we can use the process of reducing the issue to its components until all we left is the problem. There are four step in this process which define a problem, develop a plan, implement the plan and the last process is evaluate the result. Even though you couldn’t conceive of an acceptable answer off hand, you can always go back to step two and three until you find an answer for your problem. Third, defining a problem is very important for the first step. For example, when your car won’t start, there’s nobody around, and the mechanics of automobiles are a complete mystery to you. It’s a brand new car, so you are not familiar with it. Furthermore, you are going to be late for work if you don’t get your car started, so it’s up to you to figure out what the problem is. There are many issues there to deal with, but only one problem: your car won’t start. When defining the problem, do not consider things that are extraneous matters, only what the actual problem is because you can still consider the other issues later.

Furthermore, having a plan is important to solve any problem, and is crucial to keep the process on track and to find the solution in the shortest amount of time. For example, the plan should be straightforward even though though it may not be simple such as as a car which is a fairly complex piece of machinery. The plan will be to break the issue down into smaller problems that are more easily solved, until we are left with the actual cause of the problem. In addition, by implementing the plan, it is common to start out with the biggest issue which obviously can be addressed with yes or no questions. It is just as important to know what the problem is. For example, this allows us to understand more about when the thing doesn’t work out and you will most likely to solve the problem as you’ve eliminated one major possibility. However, Implementation means acting on the chosen solution. During implementation more problems may arise especially if identification or structuring of the original problem was not carried out fully. Moreover, the final stage of problem solving is concerned with checking that the process was successful. This can be achieved by monitoring and gaining feedback from people affected by any changes that occurred. It is a good practice to keep a record of outcomes and any additional problems that occurred, as problem such as personal life, education, career, so on may come to you at anytime.

In conclusion, using established tools and techniques will help individuals improve their approaches to solving the problems that their teams and their organizations face. Consequently, individuals will be more successful at solving problems and, because of this, more successful at what they do. What’s more, they will begin to build reputations as people who can handle tough situations, in a wise and positive way. These are the skills I would choose to solve a problem for the reasons cited above.
