A Separation

A Separation is a movie that leaves you longing for a better solution. It is a nerve-wracking film from Iran that examines strained relationship. With this movie, the director opens a window to Iranian society and revels a myriad of motivations for people’s actions in difficult circumstances. A simple separation is complicated by responsibilities, misunderstanding, and conflicts.

Nader and Simon are husband and wife. They sit in a courtroom waiting for a separation. Simon wants better opportunities for her daughter in the future. She decides to move to America. Nader doesn’t want to leave because his father has Alzheimer’s. A judge decides that their daughter must live with her father so Simin leaves them and moves into her mother’s house. Nader looks for someone who take care of his father. He hires Rezieh who is a very religious woman. She is pregnant and bring her daughter with her to take care of the old man.

One day, Nader’s father gets into a dangerous situation. Rezieh goes out the house and leaves the old man alone. When Nader comes to home he is angry about this and pushes Rezieh out the door. They find out that Rezieh had a miscarriage because of Nadder. When Rezieh’s husband Hahad find out that his wife was working at their house he gets angry and fights Nader. He thinks she had miscarriage because Nader pushed her to out the door.

Two couples meet in court. Nader insists that he didn’t know Rezieh was pregnant. If he knew Rezieh was pregnant, he would have to go to jail. Rezieh claims Nader knew she was pregnant.

In the movie, everyone defend themselves without a lawyer. It is an interesting insight on the Iranian legal system. There are in a dilemma. They can’t tell the truth because they want to protect their reputation with regard to religion, society and conscience. Each character has virtues and flaws. No one is perfect. They just have different beliefs and view point for judging how things are.
